It is not easy to write svg by hand. You have to know all the commands by heart! It is much easier to use an svg drawing tool. A good, free, one is here: svgedit
This is an example of what you can draw with it. This was my first drawing using svgedit. Like everything, drawing on a computer takes practice.

Look what happens when you put an svg drawing on top of another picture. You can see the background behind the drawing. The svg drawing doesn't have a background of its own getting in the way.
